A Family Garden Designed for Living: More Greenery, More Life, and Room to Play
How two thoughtfully designed perennial borders can transform a family garden without taking away the space that matters most.
A beautiful garden should do more than look good. It should feel like a natural extension of the home and work for the people who live there.
For this client project, the challenge was to bring more greenery, texture and seasonal interest into an existing family garden while preserving something equally important: a generous lawn where the children could run, play and enjoy being outdoors.
Our approach was simple. Rather than filling every available corner with plants, we focused on making a few carefully considered changes that would bring the entire space together.
The Challenge: Creating a Greener Garden Without Losing Space
The client wanted a garden that felt softer, greener and more connected to nature. At the same time, the lawn was an essential part of everyday family life.
This is a common challenge in small family garden design. Adding more plants can make a space feel inviting, but without careful planning, it can also reduce its functionality.
We wanted to find the right balance between these two needs, creating a garden that would feel beautiful throughout the seasons while remaining practical and enjoyable for the whole family.
Our Approach: Letting the House and Garden Become One
We started by looking at the garden as a whole, paying particular attention to the architecture of the house, the positioning of its windows and doors, and how the family uses the outdoor space.
Instead of introducing many separate planting areas, we designed two carefully positioned perennial garden borders.
Their shape, proportions and placement were chosen to complement the house and frame the existing lawn rather than compete with it.
The goal was to create a natural flow between the building and its surroundings, making the garden feel like an extension of the home.
After all, a house and its garden should feel like one whole.
The Planting Concept: A Calm Palette Inspired by Nature
For the planting scheme, we chose a restrained palette of white, soft lime and fresh green.
Rather than relying on strong colour contrasts, we introduced interest through different plant heights, leaf shapes, textures and seasonal changes.
The combination of ornamental grasses, flowering perennials and evergreen structure creates a soft, naturalistic planting design that feels relaxed without looking unplanned.
A few of our selected plants include:
Calamagrostis brachytricha – an elegant ornamental grass bringing height, movement and beautiful late-season texture.
Sesleria autumnalis – fresh green, compact grasses that help connect the planting composition.
Alchemilla mollis – soft foliage and delicate lime-green flowers.
Anemone 'Wild Swan' – graceful white flowers adding lightness to the borders.
Helleborus – providing valuable interest and flowers during the colder months.
Together, these plants create a layered composition in which no single species needs to dominate.
A Garden That Changes With the Seasons
A Thoughtful Planting Plan
Every plant has its place. We carefully considered spacing, height, seasonal interest and how the planting will develop over time – creating a natural, balanced composition that works as one.
One of our priorities was to make sure the garden would offer something interesting beyond the main summer flowering season.
The first signs of life appear early in the year, with white hellebores and purple crocuses bringing colour while much of the garden is still resting.
As spring develops, fresh green foliage begins to fill the borders. Summer introduces delicate white flowers and soft lime tones, followed by the movement and texture of ornamental grasses later in the year.
Even in winter, the planting retains a quieter character, with evergreen elements providing structure.
We wanted the garden to feel alive throughout the year, with each season bringing its own atmosphere.
Beautiful, but Designed for Everyday Life
A successful family garden needs to work just as well on an ordinary Tuesday afternoon as it does in a beautiful photograph.
That's why practicality played an important role in our design decisions.
By keeping the planting concentrated within two defined borders, we preserved the open lawn and made the garden easier to navigate and maintain.
The perennial planting was also selected with long-term maintenance in mind. Much of the seasonal care can be grouped around a main cutback towards the end of winter, rather than requiring constant intervention throughout the growing season.
The estimated plant budget for this project was approximately €435, demonstrating that a thoughtful planting design doesn't necessarily require a complete garden renovation or an enormous investment.
The Final Design: Small Changes, a Different Feeling
The result is a family garden with a softer, greener and more cohesive character.
The two perennial borders introduce natural movement, changing textures and seasonal colour, while the central lawn remains a generous, functional space for family life.
Most importantly, the planting feels connected to the architecture rather than simply added around it.
For us, this is what thoughtful garden design is about: understanding the space, listening to the people who use it and finding solutions where aesthetics and everyday life complement each other.
Sometimes, transforming a garden doesn't mean changing everything. It means knowing exactly what to change.
